"It is not for money they contend but for glory of achievement!'" Herodotus, Histories, 8.26.3
What started as a religious festival to honor the god, Zeus, soon grew into the oldest and largest competition in the world. The first Olympic games had events such as foot races, wrestling, boxing, chariot racing, and gymnastic games like bull leaping and tumbling. Initially, the athletic games were competitions between individuals, not between national teams. The individual won the respect of being a hero – receiving glory and fame for his achievement. The prize was not money, but a crown of olive.

Today the Olympics keep the spirit of the early games, bringing together athletes to earn medals and respect. And all across the United States, you can find Senior Olympic games to bring out the competition in the 50-plus set.

Every year, Warner Robins Parks and Recreation Department holds the Georgia Golden Olympics. This year the four-day event begins on September 29th and features games such as horseshoes, swimming, softball, bowling, and discus. Some games are broken into age groups, such as the 70+ Frisbee throw. Athletes choose between standing and sitting categories. The sitting category is “designed for those participants whose physical mobility is dependent upon supportive devices such as wheelchairs or walkers.” (http://www.georgiagoldenolympics.org/application_files/GGOApp2004.pdf, page 2).

An awards banquet is held on Friday evening with the theme “The American Spirit Shines On”. Dinner, dancing and an award for the best costume are all part of the festivities.

The Golden Olympics attempt to shatter negative stereotypes by drawing attention to the abilities of older adults. In addition, the games improve health and wellness while promoting an interest in sports and recreation. The event is not just for physical fitness; it is for social engagement as well. New friends are made and old acquaintances – along with those muscles – are strengthened.
Warner Robins, Georgia is not the only city that holds the Senior Olympics. Visit the Arizona Senior Olympics Web Site to find games in other states.
